"To conserve the Amazon river dolphin and its environment through research, education and collaboration."
Over 150 endangered river dolphins have died recently due to drought and high water temperatures. It is estimated that 20% of the population has been lost due to this Unusual Mortality Event (UME). The first teams of responders are in the field performing necropsies on the ones who have already persihed and trying to relocate surviving dolphins to areas of the Amazon with better conditions. Water levels are expected to drop more, which may lead to even more deaths of river dolphins, manatees, and fish. This has also greatly affected the families who live in riverside communities who rely on water for food and transportation.
