✅🖥️ Deadline (11/8): “UK Media minister Stephanie Peacock will oversee a forum of broadcasters and experts to consider the future of traditional TV so that all viewers can continue to access British content. The BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Paramount, Sky, and media regulator Ofcom will be among the industry organizations represented on the forum, which will meet every three months. The aim of the group is to ensure that “no one is left behind” in the tidal wave of internet-connected viewing and the rise of services, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Research published by the government shows that 5% of UK households, or around 1.5M people, will continue to rely on linear TV in 2040. Everyone TV partners with TV sets - but government could help more "Everyone TV – the organisation leading the evolution of free TV in the UK – has revealed multiple new #smartTV brands are joining the Freely line-up with Toshiba, Sharp, Panasonic and Metz all confirmed to offer the new streaming service backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The addition of these four new brands means Freely has confirmed six smart TV partners in total. Existing partners include Bush and Hisense, with Freely currently accessible on their 2024 4K smart TV models." Freely is the amalgamation of the UK #publicservice #broadcasters content, although its not clear whether there's only a selection of content found on the #psbs or whether everything you can find on their own #streamingplatforms you can find on Freely too. However, it's already making a mark that they've got agreements with big Smart TV manufacturers. It doesn't seem though that there will yet be an Freely button, rather just an app built into the home screen. However, amongst the brands that have made an agreement with Everyone TV, there are some big omissions, Samsung TV, LG, Roku, Amazon, Google etc. What share of the market do these companies have vs the one that have taken on Freely? It's clear that a majority of smart TV's won't have Freely. Here's where the government in the UK, or a future government via the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, could step in. It could mandate that public service media has prominence on the home screens. It could even mandate a button on controls that would massively increase recognition of Freely and UK public service media, giving them a much needed boost in the fight for relevance against the global streamers. While traditional #lineartv remains relevant, the traditional advantage that psbs had was the primacy on the EPG to always appear at the top. No matter what TV or set-top box, unencrypted or #paytv you would always see BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5. In the world of #streamingmedia, there is no such requirement or equivalent. The government is playing catchup in many areas, and to support the burgeoning UK creative sector, they need prominence as they have on linear. Government has not supported the psbs enough on this, and it should be top of the list of the DCMS to help psbs. https://lnkd.in/eYfm6B7Z This space keeps getting more interesting...from Digiday, a big part of Disney’s shift to streaming profitability last quarter was because of cost management. Couple that with Paramount shuttering its in-house production studio as part of an initiative to trim half a billion dollars from its budget and one thing is clear: cost-cutting is in the air. There’s always balancing act between revenue and cost. Common sense might dictate that less investment means a decline in content quality…but interestingly enough, most Americans think that the quality of streaming programming has only gotten better over time. Time will tell if this trend holds steady — viewers will follow quality, especially as the number of options increases. https://lnkd.in/eM-tucxc

Channel 4 streaming up "Barb data shows Channel 4’s streaming audience in June is up 30 per cent on the same month last year. Meanwhile, the channel continues to grow its overall audience, attracting new digital natives while migrating existing viewers to digital platforms, with 3 per cent year on year growth in viewing across streaming and linear combined in June. Additionally, viewing among ABC1s is up 23 per cent in June." It's strange to remember that Channel 4 was under threat only 2 years ago, threatened with privatisation, and wrongly and ignorantly portrayed as a burden on public finances, when Channel 4 is completely commercially funded. It shows what happens when there is an unbiased review, as which happened when Michelle Donelan came in to the DCMS, and decided to support the public broadcaster instead of attack them. The DCMS allowed Channel 4 to innovate, to take ypressure off justifying their existence, but allow them to see how they can enhance their existance. Interesting results for FAST - free, ad-supported, on-demand TV services - in the UK For the first decade of the streaming revolution the received wisdom, most fervently espoused by Netflix, was that the days of the TV commercial were numbered, with consumers willing to pay for uninterrupted viewing. A combination of the cost of living crisis making consumers more open to paying less in return for seeing a few ads, and the growth potential in tapping a new revenue stream as subscriber growth petered out, has made the ad break the streaming winner of 2024. However, with relatively low audience numbers, some advertisers have balked at the rates being sought by the streamers, which are considerably higher than broadcast TV, resulting in viewers seeing a lot of “house” ads promoting shows or parent company-owned attractions such as Disneyland holidays. https://lnkd.in/eyghT3ed

Channel 4 is the only major UK broadcaster to have grown TOTAL minutes of viewing across streaming and linear in 2024. This year our streaming audience has grown faster than any of the major streaming-only platforms, with a 32% year on year rise in viewer minutes. You might find that hard to believe as it is not always what we think from the media but it is true. Our long-term strategy of prioritising digital viewing and investing in distinctive, British streaming-first content is bearing fruit. Sky goes full in on #streaming "Sky in the UK is to launch a new sports streaming offering, Sky Sports+, that will be integrated into Sky TV, streaming service Now and a revamped Sky Sports mobile app. Launching this August, Sky Sports+ will offer a much broader range of sporting content via concurrent live streams, the mobile app and a dedicated new channel, at no extra cost to subscribers, according to Sky." This will start like most other SVOD platforms, in alliance with the #paytv side, the big difference here is that the pay-tv partner is Sky's main business. It clearly doesn't want to cannibalise its business, and so its offering it for free to its subscribers. "Customers with a full Sky Sports subscription will have immediate access to Sky Sports+ across Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q, and Now. As part of the Sky Sports+ launch, Now members will also be able to pause and rewind live sports content for the first time." How will it outreach to non-subscribers? And, will this influence a slow migration away from Sky's #traditionaltv platform? The platform offers more than what Sky's pay-tv platform currently offers, allowing "Sky Sports+ will have the capability to show up to 100 live events via concurrent streams, while a dedicated Sky Sports+ linear channel will showcase a selection of the best live sport, according to the pay TV broadcaster." It will also offer more football matches "the launch of Sky Sports+ coincides with the start of a new long-term partnership with the English Football League (EFL), with over 1,000 EFL games a season featuring every team more than 20 times, and every Championship club on at least 24 occasions." I wonder if this includes the blackout games, those games in the UK blacked out to promote going to stadiums to watch games. If so, that could be a real game-changer. Now, it seems Sky is shifting away from Pay TV. It won't be immediate, it's not pushing its clients at all in any direction, its trying to facilitate convenience for existing legacy clients, as well as innovation for them and new clients.
